Narration

Thanks to the development of technology, the exhaust emissions from motor vehicles have dropped significantly over recent decades. In cities, air pollution could be reduced even further, if petrol and diesel engines were fully or partially replaced by electric motors. Hybrid and electric cars are a good solution in this respect.

Currently, electric and hybrid cars are still much more expensive than petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles, but mass production will most likely lead to a fall in prices.

In electric cars, rechargeable batteries power the electric motor.

When we brake, the kinetic energy of the vehicle decreases and the energy released is used to top up the battery.

Hybrid cars use both a petrol engine and an electric motor.

When starting the car and at low speeds, the car is driven by the electric motor. The petrol engine kicks in during acceleration, when more power is needed. At higher speeds, the vehicle is powered by the petrol engine and uses less fuel. In this case, the petrol engine also charges the battery of the electric motor. When we brake, the kinetic energy of the vehicle decreases, and the energy released is used to charge the battery.
