Events of the battle


Stage 1 (06:20, 4 June 1942)

A group of 108 Japanese planes attacked the airfields on the Midway Islands. 16 American planes were destroyed, and the airfields were severely damaged but remained functional.

Stage 2 (09:30, 4 June 1942)

The Japanese aircraft carriers were attacked by 177 planes from Task Force 16 and 35 planes from Task Force 17. Japanese planes severely damaged the attacking units.

Stage 3 (10:15, 4 June 1942)

In the second wave of American attacks, 55 dive bombers successfully attacked the Japanese carriers Akagi, Kaga and Soryu.

Stage 4 (12:20, 4 June 1942)

The Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryu launched a counterattack with its remaining planes. The Yorktown was seriously damaged, and was sunk by a Japanese submarine 2 days later.

Stage 5 (17:00, 4 June 1942)

40 planes launched from the carriers Enterprise and Hornet attacked and destroyed the Hiryu.

Stage 6 (5 June 1942)

The Japanese fleet was forced to retreat after suffering serious losses.
